15: Beaked Whale Group Deep Dive Behavior from Passive Acoustic Monitoring

چکیده
Although the causal link between sonar and stranding has not been described explicitly, beaked whales are one of the cetacean taxa more sensitive to use of Navy sonar (Moretti et al., 2014; Tyack et al., 2011). Despite their vulnerability, Blainville's beaked whale, Mesoplodon densirostris (Md), are routinely detected year-round on the AUTEC range, coincident with routine use of Navy sonar. This has led to the suggestion that perhaps whales can become habituated to sonar or at least do not respond in the same way as naïve animals (Schorr et al., 2014). Perhaps whales choose to stay in areas of frequent sonar use because the advantages of greater foraging opportunities outperform the disadvantages of sonar exposure. This suggestion makes AUTEC an excellent laboratory to understand not only fundamental aspects of their biology and ecology, but also how and why these whales might be impacted by the use of sonar.

Acoustic and foraging behavior of a Baird's beaked whale, Berardius bairdii, exposed to simulated sonar
Beaked whales are hypothesized to be particularly sensitive to anthropogenic noise, based on previous strandings and limited experimental and observational data. However, few species have been studied in detail. We describe the underwater behavior of a Baird's beaked whale (Berardius bairdii) from the first deployment of a multi-sensor acoustic tag on this species. The animal exhibited shallow ...
متن کاملPassive acoustic monitoring of beaked whale densities in the Gulf of Mexico
Beaked whales are deep diving elusive animals, difficult to census with conventional visual surveys. Methods are presented for the density estimation of beaked whales, using passive acoustic monitoring data collected at sites in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) from the period during and following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (2010-2013). Beaked whale species detected include: Gervais' (Mesoplodon e...
متن کاملTrackline and point detection probabilities for acoustic surveys of Cuvier's and Blainville's beaked whales.
Acoustic survey methods can be used to estimate density and abundance using sounds produced by cetaceans and detected using hydrophones if the probability of detection can be estimated. For passive acoustic surveys, probability of detection at zero horizontal distance from a sensor, commonly called g(0), depends on the temporal patterns of vocalizations. Methods to estimate g(0) are developed b...
متن کامل15: Modeling of Habitat and Foraging Behavior of Beaked Whales in the Southern California Bight
The overall goal of this project was to improve our understanding of beaked whale distribution and foraging behavior and to describe inter-specific differences. We investigated spatio-temporal patterns for Cuvier’s beaked whale and a beaked whale producing echolocation signal type BW43 in the Southern California Bight using passive acoustic encounters, comparing data gathered from line transect...
متن کاملPassive acoustic detection of deep-diving beaked whales.
Beaked whales can remain submerged for an hour or more and are difficult to sight when they come to the surface to breathe. Passive acoustic detection (PAD) not only complements traditional visual-based methods for detecting these species but also can be more effective because beaked whales produce clicks regularly to echolocate on prey during deep foraging dives. The effectiveness of PAD for b...
